PSYCHO-PATHS: Boost Your Happiness!
Summertime brings the hope of happy times for many people. That long-overdue vacation to relax, the family reunion, a chair by the pool with a cold drink, or some hot romance—experience has shown bursts of happiness can come in many different experiences!
Are there ways to boost your happy-o-meter without acting crazy? Science says, yes. We can make some choices that give a boost to our enjoyment of these lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.

I’m referring to happiness in general terms. Professor Marc Brackett lists 50 words that we use for various aspects of happiness: ecstatic, thrilled, pleasant, blissful, content, satisfied, blessed, chill, plus all the slang Gen Z throws around![1] I’m happy to share that humans enjoy happiness in many ways!
To get technical for a moment, scientists understand these emotions are connected to the action of chemicals in the brain and body. Four chemicals are released by various thoughts and actions to regulate our moods. The process is incredibly complex, powerful, and yet so common we give it little thought. We recognize that some of our happiness is instinctual, popping up within before we consciously choose it. For instance, a stranger’s act of courtesy to allow a Mom with preschoolers in tow to go ahead in the check-out line can boost the mood of both with no specific thought of creating happiness.
Beyond this, let’s find some generic ways science says we can boost our happy-o-meter.
An initial path is to prompt the release of Dopamine by achieving some goal. This is the reward and motivation neurochemical. It pops when you set a goal and achieve it. I felt satisfied when I finished power-washing the patio. You will have many other chores or project plans to work on that will bring some good vibes. The anticipation of the dopamine pleasure can even motivate pushing to the finish line.
A second way is stimulating Serotonin production by focusing on positive behaviors and thoughts. We get upbeat responses when we exercise. We grow calm when we meditate. I express gratitude to God each night at bedtime that brings a sense of peace. The serotonin connection can linger for hours as a mood changer.
A third way is the path of social connections, touch, and caring for others that releases Oxytocin. We are wired to be social creatures for mental health. Good hugs, meeting with friends, playing with pets, or caring for others are the practical steps we can take to feel energized. Meeting each Sunday with church friends for worship and study is a formula that helps me.
The final dimension is the Endorphin boost that brings euphoria through physical activity, laughter, dance, singing, massage, and sex. The lack of an endorphin boost over time can bring a negativity to our minds. Gaining it doesn’t demand wild, risky misadventures. The laughter shared around the family dinner table enlivens my mind for hours.
Of course, this simplistic overview hardly scratches the surface of happiness. We can use the ideas, though, in moving our emotions. I encourage you to experiment with all four dimensions to boost your happy-o-meter even if your dream vacation is on hold. You can beat the summertime blues!
